I have been writing about clearing clutter, interior design, and Feng Shui for many years now (seven years counts as “many”, right?) and I do practice my own advice but usually in small ways because it is easier to manage. Whether you are on a budget or are super busy growing your empire, small changes are always a good idea unless you are looking to overturn everything you’ve ever known quickly. This can be a positive thing, but be very sure that you are ready for big changes because they will come!
Why am I saying this?
I have been writing and talking for a while now about clearing clutter. Most who read that phrase think of piles of stuff that has accumulated in their home or office and make it hard to function. Stuck energy. But clutter doesn’t always refer to physical “stuff”.
Clutter can be things that you have buried deep down inside so that you can avoid thinking about it and move on with your life in a positive manner. But you don’t truly ever look at those negative things that happened (or you think are negative) and examine them to find the positive that you can take away from these experiences.
I have been reading a book by Tisha Morris called, Clutter Intervention: How Your Stuff is Keeping You Stuck. (My affiliate link in case you want to buy the book). I thought it sounded interesting and boy, was I right! This book inspired me to finally get in there and clean up my clothes closet which I haven’t been able to walk into easily in months.
Why is clearing clutter important?
Let me back up a little and tell you that I work from home. Our house is small and I had to carve out an office space in my master bedroom which is a big no-no in Feng Shui but the only space we weren’t using on a regular basis where I could fit a desk. My husband uses the dining room table so I can’t work there.
Anyway, I cleaned out my closet and organized most of it. I still have work to do. All of this to say there is A LOT of BS coming up that I thought I was over and dealt with. Tisha and others warn that this will happen. Well, they’re right!
So instead of pushing it back down and shoving it all in the actual and proverbial closet, if I want to move forward, I have to face these things and work through them. Fun. How has this manifested? I have been taking lots of naps. My energy has been drained.
What is my solution?
I’m going to take that nap, get up, face the crap, and move on. How? I have to finish clearing clutter out of that closet and keep going until the whole house has been transformed. I can feel the changes coming and I am getting myself and my home ready to accept them.
Believe me, if I can do this so can you. Don’t believe me? Try clearing clutter out of your closet and see what happens. Remember that I warned you.
Do you find that each day papers and things are piling up in your house and workspace? If you want to work, you periodically have to clean up and clear out so you can focus?
Maybe you have cleared things out, but now your hallway is narrower because of all the things you stacked there to keep them out of your closet. You meant to donate them or have a yard sale, but the stuff is still there gathering dust and getting kicked aside so you can walk through without falling over it.
Take that nap and when you wake up move those things to your car. Take it one step further, start the car, and drive to the charity of your choice and give it to them.
You will feel so much lighter once you do. When those emotions come up from the past, let them. Feel them. Realize that you are not the same person now as you were then. Figure out what you learned from them and say, “Thank you.” Out loud.
It’s okay to cry if you need to. Then let it go.
