Uncover These 5 Hidden Office Color Secrets That Will Transform Your Business

Whether you follow Feng Shui principles or not, color has a way of affecting our senses and emotions like nothing else. It’s one of the reasons that so many people ask for help when choosing color for their home. Why not take the same care when choosing color for the walls of your office? It affects you whether you are at home or at work and if you work from home, even better. You can choose that wall color that best suits you and transform your business with these tips.

First, before you even think about painting your walls, you need to clean your office. Get rid of the clutter. File your important papers. Empty your  wastebasket daily. You want to create a space that is as stress-free as possible and the quickest way to do that is to clear it.

Now that everything is in order, let’s talk about color. There is no “best” color for your office. It all depends on you and  your needs according to your personality and the type of business you run or work in. Having said that, here are some of the best colors to choose for your office walls. Yellow, purple, blue, and brown.

Yellow:   Yellow is an earth tone and it symbolizes control. Yellow promotes patience and wisdom, and it stimulates mental energy. Choose yellow, tan, or off-white. Yellow is a good color if you are in sales or marketing. Starting with the top left going clockwise, the colors are Lemon Meringue, Crème Fraiche, Butter, and Light Yellow. All colors mentioned are from the Benjamn Moore Color Preview Collection.

Purple: Lavender is purple hue that promotes calm, determination, clarity, imagination, and creativity. It’s a good wall color for media, technology, or marketing companies. Top left going clockwise the colors are Wild Orchid, Lavender Lipstick, Pale Iris, and Raspberry Ice.

Blue: Blue is a water color. It attracts prosperity, soothes the mind, and relieves tension. Blue is a good wall color for deadline oriented offices such as, press rooms or payroll. Medical and dental offices should use blue as well. Top left going clockwise the colors are Covington Blue, Wythe Blue, Caribbean Azure, and Marine Blue.

Brown: Brown is the Wood element. Just like the image of trees, brown stimulates stability and strengthens decision making skills. It would be a good color for any business that deals with other people’s money.

The colors I have in my office are a pale aqua for the walls (soothing, prosperity), white for my desk and trim (focus and balance), and gold (metal, clarity).

The Diva’s Home and Etsy

Happy Monday! Today I am announcing my new shop on Etsy. It has been a couple of months of hard work (sometimes gross work) to get my shop up and running, but I am proud of my effort and I hope you like it too.

I will be placing a badge on my website http://www.mydivabydesign.com, and hope fully the one here will work too.

O

Do me a favor and take a look!

vintage_brass_oval_glass_frame_diva_by_design
Victorian Style Bubble Glass Picture Frame from Italy. The most popular item in my shop right now!

Everything listed on Etsy is either handmade or vintage so there are no brand new items there. But I search for nice things to share with you and everything listed is in good or better condition. I also sell furniture that I fix up, but I don’t ship that so if you are in the Harlingen area, come visit me at Market Days on Jackson Street on Saturday, July 11. Should be nice and hot!

I will also be adding things that I can’t list on Etsy to my website, but right now that page (click here) has the beginnings of my E-design mood board offerings.

I know, you don’t read my blog to be sold to and I rarely post anything I have for sale. But I AM an interior decorator and I DO need to make money in my business so that I can keep blogging and giving you more home decorating tips and advice. Otherwise, what’s the point of having a business?

All I ask is that if you enjoy reading my blog, please share each post with your friends on social media. I need help getting the word out since I’m new. Especially this one! 🙂

Thank you for following me and reading each week. I also appreciate feedback, so let me know what you think of my shop in the comments!

A Day of Remembering

in_remembrance

Today we remember those who gave their lives in military service to our country. As Americans, we are grateful for their sacrifice. We could not enjoy the freedoms that we have today without it.

As you go about your day, please take a moment to say a prayer for the families of those who have fallen fighting for our freedom.

Master The Art of the Feng Shui Command Position With These Tips

I recently wrote about what things you need to consider before you begin to design your home office here, here, and here. (All of these things can be applied to your office at work as well.) I have one more consideration for you now that you are ready to begin designing your office space. It has to do with space planning, or where you will put your desk.

In Feng Shui, the placement of your work desk is critical to the success of your business or career. The placement even has a name – The Command Position. Sounds great, right? These tips are also helpful if you just want to know the most comfortable position in which to place your desk.

modern office interior

Why the Command Position is important:

  • You benefit from the energy, or Chi, that moves through the space,
  • This power position harmonizes and focuses the energy of your office space,
  • It enhances your sense of protection and safety,
  • Provides a sense of power and abundance,
  • You are in visual command and control of your space, and
  • It allows you to face life directly, both literally and figuratively.

Place your desk as far from the door as possible with your back against a solid wall, but not in line with the door itself or with your back to a window.

Sounds simple, huh?

That all depends on the architecture of your room.

What happens if I have my back to the door?

Life can sneak up on you in negative ways. You may find that you aren’t facing important issues directly and you are always dealing with unexpected events. If you can’t move your desk, fix it by hanging a large enough mirror that you can see the door in it while you are sitting at your desk.

What if I have my desk in a straight line with the door?

The Chi entering the room is coming straight at you without having a chance to slow down. This causes stress, irritability, overwhelm, and health problems. The energy is too strong. You can fix it by hanging a faceted, crystal sphere halfway between your desk and the door.

What is so bad about facing the wall while I’m at my desk?

Your creativity and thoughts will be blocked and you will find that it is hard to get any work done. If you find that you work better elsewhere in the room, or in another room, this may be why. Take a second and evaluate how often you work somewhere else. Then move your desk.

But I like to look out the window while I work.

Do you find yourself day-dreaming a lot? If your desk faces the window, your thoughts and business Chi float right out and off into the distance. Do you forget what you were about to do often? The view is also distracting and it causes you to miss important business opportunities. Also, your computer monitor is back-lit by the window and this causes eye strain.

Why have a solid wall behind me while I work?

This is similar to building a fort in front of a mountain for protection.

Not only is the placement of your desk important, but the desk itself should be a substantial business-style desk to enhance your feeling of power and authority. Your chair should have a high back for protection and strength. The door to your office should close and lock. And the more space there is between you and the door, the more territory you command.

In everything there should be balance. Don’t over-do it because real power requires balance. You want to be in command of your business and life, not dominate others.

Why Your Work Environment is Critical to Your Success

In keeping with my thoughts on how your surroundings (and your home office) have an effect on you, I am sharing a post with gracious permission from Kat Loterzo, author of “Superwoman Success Smackdown” and all around ass-kicking business woman. you can click on the title of her book to get a copy, or you can click on the title below to read the post on her site if you like.

I love reading her stuff. It’s very motivational and right on target as you will see…

Create an Environment for Your Ultimate Success
Do you ever find yourself wondering why you can’t seem to uplevel your lifestyle and surrounds as fast as you wish you could?

I remember being in the second half of my twenties, officially underway with life as an online entrepreneur, and knowing that ‘one day’ I’d no longer be traipsing the streets in my workout gear, backpack on my back, and working from wherever I could find good coffee.

One day, I thought, when I’d REALLY made it, my life would be 100% 5-star. I’d wear gorgeous designer clothes, carry a stunning one of a kind handbag, and base myself in the very best beautiful locations for my on-the-go office.

I’d have the house, car, and travel schedule to match, and my at-home office would be everything I’d ever dreamt of, with a stunning view over my equally stunning garden.

I couldn’t wait!

Now here’s the funny thing. When I look back from where I’m at now to all of the years I spent accepting a (for me) sub-standard lifestyle or environment, they were also the years of struggle and fighting to breakthrough.

Makes sense, right? After all, I couldn’t exactly upgrade my life if I wasn’t yet making the money!

Or could I …?

“I believe that your environment is critical to your success.”

I believe that your environment is critical to your success. You’ve heard the saying that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with (SO true, as behaviours and beliefs really do ‘rub off’), and it applies equally to your office, home and lifestyle surrounds. Now I’m not saying that you need to (for example) stay in 5-star hotels, live in a mansion, wear designer threads etc in order to reach success. What I AM saying is that how your environment feels to YOU matters.

For example – right now I’m sitting in the breakfast restaurant of a 5-star hotel. I upgraded my room to one on the top floor with stunning views. I’m eating pricier food than what I could get down the road in a cheapo cafe. And I’m planning a spa treatment later this day when I have a break. This feels good for me. I LOVE that I now only fly business class (and by mid 2015 it will be only first class!). I love that we always stay in the best hotels and go to the best restaurants. I love tipping 25% when in the States. I love that I can gratefully give money to other people, to companies, to small businesses, or wherever I go and I can trust that that money will return 10-fold to me and also yes – I can enjoy the first class environment that I long pined for.

But what I wear while I’m doing all of this? Mostly still workout gear, even in the restaurants! Hey – long days on the go with kids and moving from city to city on a nearly daily basis means I really could care less about designer threads. But actually I just don’t really care in general. I’m still a Lululemon and Mac in my backpack kinda girl, and my ‘office’ is still wherever the good coffee and wifi can be found.

What matters to you?

What do you need to wear, eat, work on or in or at, where do you need to go and how do you need to live your life in order to feel GREAT about yourself?

And – being honest now – what do you know is right now in any way dragging you DOWN due to the energy or beliefs it’s perpetuating in you.

The truth is, no matter how much you might try to convince yourself otherwise, you really do become an average of your surrounds. Of the people but also the general VIBE of it all. So yes, it’s about what matters or feels good to YOU but it’s also about recognising that there may be levels of belief about success you haven’t even considered, simply because you haven’t been exposed to them.

For example, earlier this year I joined a new mastermind with a goal of reaching 100k+ months consistently. Once I got chatting to the other students in there I found some were making upwards of a million dollars each month, and there was a hundred million dollar club in the group! These were figures I hadn’t even considered. All of a sudden my 100k month seemed so much easier to reach (and it was!) and also kind of a small goal!

The point is not that you always have to strive for more more more and never be happy.

The point is what are the TRUE limits you desire to place upon yourself, and is the way you’re living right now limiting you BELOW your actual desired potential?

Did working hard to make great money get me to a point where I can now call people like that friends and peers, now travel first class, now afford my dream home, now buy my fancy Mont Blanc pens and whatever else makes me feel good?

Or was it, perhaps, that –

Before I ever had money to spare I saved up and bought a $1000 Mont Blanc pen to write with …?

When I couldn’t ‘afford it’ I spent pennies I didn’t have on the best leather journal rather than a cheapo one …?

When I was struggling to pay my rent I’d pay for coffee in a fancy hotel lobby bar and work there, just to be in those surrounds …?

When my budget said Target I bought Lululemon workout gear … ?!

When I was already 40k in debt I invested in a 72k coaching program because I intuitively knew it was what I needed to get to the next level …?

When my business did grow but so did my debt, and I was over 100k, I invested again, this time in 50k coaching, because I knew I was worth it …?

When it was absolutely unnecessary practically – and this one many times over – I upgraded our hotel room so that I would feel LUXURIOUS in my environment and see myself as someone who has the best and therefore ACT accordingly within my business and life …?

Before I felt worthy I joined masterminds with top entrepreneurs and leaders, knowing that it was time to be the stupidest person in the room and watch MY level rise as a result …?

When recent accommodation booked wasn’t up to scratch and I knew clients were coming to see my there, I dropped an extra 3k just to get us moved, knowing I didn’t ‘have to’ but that I DID HAVE TO …?

When I’d already spent over 100k on my education this year I paid out another 15k that could have gone into savings to attend yet another conference (40 hours of travel, with kids, to get there!) and shelled out extra to be a VIP … then jumped into another 10k spend while at the event! … because I believed I HAD to be there …?

Your environment counts.

It is CRITICAL to your success.

The books you read, the people you associate with, how you spend your free time, the courses you go out of your way to attend, the investments you make to surround yourself with the right learning or mentors, the way your working surrounds make you feel, the way your clothing makes you feel, the way YOU make yourself feel in how you treat yourself, how you act towards yourself, how you believe about yourself and your business … it counts.

And here’s the thing.

It’s easy to tell yourself that when you get to ‘that level’ you can afford to be that person. But it’s kind of like an unfit person telling themselves that once they magically ‘get fit’ they’ll run that race.

You want to be the first class entrepreneur and live your lifestyle dream? Start running that race now. Act ‘as if’. Fake it till you make it! Do whatever it takes, however often it takes, to create an environment that lifts you UP or else the one you PUT up with will surely drag you down.

A challenge for today:

Write a quick list of everything that’s popped into your mind while reading this post and choose one small (or big!) way in which you can level it up this week.

You’re worth it baby! Time to live that one day dream TODAY!

Remember –

Life is Now. Press Play.

Four Colorful Ideas for Painting Your Cottage Style Home

In Add Character to Your Home with Cottage Style Decorating, I wrote about the characteristics of the Cottage decorating style. If this style fits your design personality, I have some color palettes that might work for you. If you are tired of all the grays and want to add some subtle color this palette makes a good start with some pinks and taupes.

It’s still a little neutral, but with a slight hint of color for those not ready to completely redo everything.

cottage_style_decorating_color_palette_barely_there

The next home decorating color palette is still neutral, but adds hints of green and blue to bring in nature.

If you’re ready for more color that isn’t too bold, this next palette might whet your appetite.

And, last but not least, go bolder with this palette of blue, green, and pink.

The Third Thing You Should Do For a Successful Home Office Design

If you work from home and your office looks like this:

Home Office with Chaotic Cords

You may want to rethink your priorities. Setting up a couple of tables and plopping your office equipment on it just doesn’t say successful entrepreneur or executive. What your office looks like has an effect on how you see yourself, how others see you, and your general well-being.

I’m not saying that you need to make everything so comfortable that you are constantly yearning for a nap. What I am saying is that you need to make your office look the way you want your business or work-life to be: successful. Before today, I wrote about two other lists you need to make that will give priority to your comfort and ease in getting work done in your home office. You can apply these tips to your office at work too.

The first list was all about what tasks you need to do there. You can read about it here. The second list was all about what tools you are going to need to perform those tasks. And that post is here. Today’s list is about your actual work environment, or the space where your office will be.

Consider these things:

  • the ventilation or climate control
  • how many electrical outlets, cable or phone lines you need
  • how much lighting (natural and artificial) is necessary
  • privacy and noise control
  • physical and spiritual needs, such as – music, windows, artwork, family photos

Once you know what you need in your personal office, you can then plan your design. budgeting for your project will also be easier. Designing is the fun part.

Now that you have a comprehensive list of your needs, putting the design on paper is the next step. You can read here about how important the decor you choose for your office can be. If you find that the design step is overwhelming, call me. Space planning and design are part of the services I offer on my website.

I want you to have the best working environment that supports you specifically in all that you do. We want to avoid this:

“The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” – Robert Frost

The Second Thing You MUST Do For a Successful Home Office Design

On Monday, I told about making a list of everything you will be doing in your office in The First Thing You Should Do For a Successful Home Office Design. Today, we will talk about what tools you will need to perform those tasks. This is another list building exercise. I know, who knew that designing your office would involve so many lists?

Trust me, if you plan ahead, you will end up with the perfect office to suit you and your business needs. Your business will run much more smoothly and you can get out at the end of the day for that much needed margarita!

So, what do you need in your office? For starters, a desk, a chair, and a lamp. Duh!

desk_chair_lamp_Diva_by_Design2

This is not my desk  or lamp, but my office chair looks exactly like this one and I love it!

Next on the list is your computer equipment such as:

  • a computer 😉
  • printer or all-in-one
  • tablet
  • router
  • modem
  • phone
  • separate computer back-up system for your files (that you actually use to back-up your files!) I say this because part of the services that I provide with a complete office design is to set up your computer equipment so it is ready to go and protected. But you have to maintain that protection once we leave. One of our clients bought a back-up system for their computer and told his employee to put it in with their server. That’s exactly what the employee did. Put it in the room NEXT to the computer. Yes, they lost all of their data.

computer_for_your_home_office_Diva_by_Design

Next, you need to think about where you are going to store all your important papers, samples, products, etc. So you will need:

  • filing cabinets
  • storage containers
  • shelving

storage_for_home_office_Diva_by_Design

And last, but not least, your office supplies, reference books, and packing, shipping, and mailing supplies. Plan ahead for where you are going to keep all of these things so they are near at hand and so that you have space dedicated for them.

office_supplies_Diva_by_Design3

Yes, I have the gold stapler! What kind of diva would I be without something shiny and gold in my office? On Monday, I will share with you some more things you need to consider before you set up your home office for success.

The First Thing You Should Do for a Successful Home Office Design

Business from home

You are an entrepreneur and you need to find space for a home office. It’s critical that your home office fuels your desire for success in your chosen business. One of the biggest problems that stay-at-home-moms who also run a business have is privacy.  A space that is dedicated specifically for business and nothing else might be on your to-do list, but you just haven’t gotten around to setting it up.

home office design ideas Diva by Design

Before you even think about where to find this space, here’s the first thing that you need to do:

Make a list of what tasks you need to perform in this space.

Think this step isn’t important? Believe me it is! You need to know exactly what you will be doing in this office space before you start setting up so that you don’t have to spend valuable money-making time reworking your home office space later.

Here are some examples of what tasks you might perform in your home office:

  • phone calls
  • computer and internet use
  • writing a blog, letters and/or documents
  • packaging and shipping
  • faxing
  • receiving deliveries
  • book-keeping and data entry
  • invoicing and filing
  • visits from clients or prospective customers

When you make your list, be sure to write down each task in order of importance. This will help you when you begin to design your space.
